Just Between Us...
Hi. My name is Janelle Stoermer. I live in Little Rock, Arkansas, with my husband Walter. We are home missionaries with a Christian organization that reaches children for Christ. You may know me as the writer of the biblical worldview blog Missionary at Rest (missionaryatrest.blogspot.com). That blog was started in 2016, initially as an attempt to write about my ministry experiences, but it eventually evolved into more of a biblical worldview blog that sometimes talked about missionary happenings. If you haven't read it, I hope you'll check it out. I write in that blog just about weekly. At any rate, nice to meet you!
This blog has a different feel. Like Missionary at Rest, it is from the point of view of Evangelical Christianity. However, it is a lighter touch. In this blog, I'm going to be reviewing TV programs, movies, books and other entertainment and popular culture media. A lot of it will be humorous and fun. I will sometimes share my own experience with these media I am reviewing, or draw some conclusions (yes, there will sometimes be a moral). My main purpose is to entertain those of you who also enjoy (or don't enjoy) the things I'm reviewing. I look forward to having a lot of feedback!
I hasten to add that I'm not the pop-culture guru many of you might be. I grew up in the 80s and 90s (I'm either among the youngest Gen-Xers or among the very oldest Millennials. It depends on whose cutoff you go by). I think they're calling people my age Xennials. We grew up without the Internet, cell phones, etc. but experienced those things in adulthood. I sent my first email at age 18, one week before my high school graduation, so that sounds about right. I got my first cell phone at age 20, but I forgot I had it half the time and still used payphones almost unthinkingly for a while! I was a child and teenager of the 20th century, and was in my 20s and beyond in the 21st century. I grew up in a suburban neighborhood where my siblings and I rode our bikes all over the place with our neighbor friends. We spent our afternoons and Saturdays out of doors. When we were old enough, we'd ride our bikes down to the shopping center and hang out (getting sodas and candy with friends). One of our friends used to use the payphone at the shopping center to make prank phone calls, then beg us not to tell any adults what she had done! Watching TV was kind of an afterthought to us, but it did rain sometimes after all.... Also, my parents didn't let us out of the house on Saturday before 10am, because they were worried we'd disrupt the neighborhood and wake up all the people who were trying to sleep in (as in, the parents of our friends), so, until 10am, we had no choice but to watch TV. We had our favorite shows, some of which were new from our time, some from the past that we watched as reruns. We also loved going to the movies (something my husband and I still enjoy today). Of course, reading was a favorite pastime in our home, and still is with my husband and me today. Radio and other things played a roll as well (in junior high we'd call the radio stations and request our favorite songs, hoping we could influence them to be higher in the top-ten countdown on the weekend. All of this to say, I may not have watched as many shows/movies as the average person, but I saw my share, and have my amusing thoughts and conclusions about them.
I'm very personable. I love hearing from readers. Please reach out to me if you'd like to me to review something specific. I have a lot in mind for upcoming posts, but am very open to suggestions. If it is something I never saw/read/listened to, let me know about it anyway, because maybe I can check it out and still write about it here. Blessings!
